- Robert N. Michels
"BOB"
1922 2008
Bob passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at his home. He was born in Aurora on June 3, 1922. He lived most of his life on Pigeon Hill, on the East side of Aurora. After graduating from Marmion and spending two years at Purdue University, he joined the Air Force and spent the rest of the war as a flight instructor. This began a life-long love of airplanes and aircraft. In 1946, he joined his father, Ben and his brother, Art, in the coal and oil business. In 1949, with his father's help, he opened Michels Lumber Co., which he ran until 1994, with the help of his five sons, two of his daughters and his faithful friend, Don Martin of Plano, IL.
The above was written by Bob, himself. We, as a family, want to add that he will always be remembered as a generous and kind employer, an honest and customer-oriented merchant. He was active in the Serra Club, the Lion's Club and the Knights of Columbus and continued to participate in their projects even into his eighties. He was married on June 24, 1944 to Patricia Raspiller of Aurora and they were blessed with a loving and happy marriage for over 64 years. He praised her wonderful cooking, her loving homemaking and they had many years of companionship on their travels in this country and abroad.
Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia; eight children, Claire (Alan) Pepper of Aurora, Linda Taylor of Rockford, Dave (Linda) of Aurora, Steve (Cathy Olson) of Aurora, Nick (Jean) of Lee, IL, Faye (Mike) Edlund of Rockford, Laurie (Dick) Cubbage and Bill (Diana) of Aurora; 19 grandchildren, Michael Taylor, Janelle Taylor, Matt Warner, Adam Michels, Drew Michels, Jenny Huffstetler, Bryan Michels, Ben Michels, Kristin Propst, Bob Michels, Nicole Bryant, Megan Michels, David Bond, Kelly Bond, Jake Bond, Dylan Bond, Kevin Michels, Josh Michels, Jessica Michels; and four great-grandchildren; he also leaves behind his brothers, BJ (Lois), Jim (Carole); his sister, Anna Marie (C.J.) Avram; sisters-in-law, Lillian Michels, Virginia Cyr and Dolores Kartheiser.
He is preceded in death by his son, Dan; his parents, Ben and Marie (Ludwig) Michels; son-in-law, Bob Taylor, grandson, Ryan Michels; and his brother, Art.
Bob will be remembered as a father for his faith in God, his generosity and fairness and his love of their mom. He called himself an avid golfer and bowler and a lazy fisherman.
