33275 Her Burns Are Fatal

Mrs. John Speltz of Oak Ridge is Dead From Explosion of a Lamp. Accident Monday Evening

Prompt Action on the Part of Mr. Speltz Extinguishes Flames and Prevents House Burning-Unfortunately Woman Suffered Much.

As the result of burns received from the explosion of a lamp at her home on Monday night, Mrs. John Speltz of Oak Ridge is dead. The accident happened in a peculiar manner. All of the family had retired with the exception of Mrs. Speltz, she having occasion to remain up a little longer than the others. When she was ready to follow the others to bed she started to blow out the lamp, when instead of going in the usual manner it exploded, throwing out flames and setting fire to her clothing in several places. She was alone in the room, but her cries speedily brought Mr. Speltz to her aid, not, however, until she was badly burned. He fought the flames successfully so far as putting them out was concerned but Mrs. Speltz had received mortal injuries in the brief time it took him to come from another room to her assistance.

She suffered considerable pain. A physician from Plainview was summoned, but necessarily it took him some time to drive over. He did what he could to alleviate her sufferings, binding up the wounds, and administering medicine that would deaden the pain. It was apparent almost from the first, however, that Mrs. Speltz was too, badly burned for her injuries to have other than a fatal result. She lingered until 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, when death came to her relief.

There is no known reason why the lamp should have exploded, and it is quite probable that an investigation will be made to determine if possible the cause. By prompt work by Mr. Speltz the house was prevented from burning, which would have added further to the horror of the situation.

The Speltz family has resided at Oak Ridge for the past thirty-five years, and Mrs. Speltz was widely known and esteemed. Her untimely death will bring sincere sorrow to all who knew her. She was well along in years and leaves a husband and five sons and one daughter, all survive. The Winona Republican-Herald, Jan. 11, 1905; page 8
