20298 | Death Calls John Speltz, Old Resident of Winona County Came to this section in 1864-Was prominent Oak Ridge Farmer before his retirement-Lived in Winona 20 years. John Speltz, who helped with the development of Winona county in the early days, died early this morning at the home of his son, Louis, on the farm near Altura at the age of 85 years. Mr. Speltz had lived at 468 West Fourth street for the past 20 years following his retirement but recently made his home with his son. Emigrating to America in 1864, Mr. Spettz, arrived in Winona county to take his place with other pioneer residents in settling the country. He was born April 16, 1842 in Luxembourg and before coming to America completed a year and a half of compulsory military training in his native land. Four brothers and four sisters, none of whom are now living, resided near Rollingstone with the exception of one brother who settled in Iowa, and a sister who remained in Luxembourg. Buys Oak Ridge Farm Upon his arrival in this country, Mr. Speltz, joined an older brother, Matthew, on a farm a few miles northwest of Rollingstone. In 1868 he purchased a farm on Oak Ridge and later considerably increased his agricultural holdings. During the same year he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Rivers of Rollingstone. With her family, Miss Rivers had also emigrated to this country in 1854. Seven children were born, five sons and two daughters, of whom all but one are now living. They are Matthew Speltz, residing at 320 West Wabasha street, Henry, Altura, Louis and Andrew, living on farms near Altura, Jerome, and Mrs. Andrew Greden, Rollingstone. Up to the death of his first wife about 23 years ago, Mr. Speltz remained actively engaged on the farm. Several years later he was married to Mrs. Maria Kramer, a former resident of Elba. Soon afterward the couple retired and came to Winona to live. Mrs. Speltz died just seven months ago. Active in Public Affairs. Mr. Speltz was for many years active in public affairs and has held various offices in his township. H was also known in earlier years as a prominent leader in his community in musical circles, having for many years directed the "Oak Ridge Male Chorister Club". Funeral services for Mr. Speltz will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's church at Oak Ridge. The Rev. Anthony Hennekes, pastor of the church, will read the last rites and burial will be in the church cemetery. The pallbearers will be Francis Greden, Stephen Speltz, George Speltz, Richard Speltz, Alfred Speltz, Eugene Speltz and Sylvester Speltz, all grandsons of the deceased. 20300 | Death's Summons is Sudden for Peter Speltz of West Fifth Street Preparing to Celebrate his Seventy-seventh Birth Anniversary Next Sunday He Succumbs to Heart Failure Today. Peter Speltz, for over fifty years a resident of Winona county, died suddenly this morning at ? o'clock at the age of seventy-seven years. Death came to Mr. Speltz on his birth anniversary. He had planned to celebrate with his family his seventy-seventh anniversary on next Sunday but fate has decreed that he shall hae been tenderly born to final repose in St. Mary's cemetery by that time. Death was due to heart failure, with which Mr. Speltz had been troubled for some time. His end was sudden altho not entirely unexpected. He had been working aournd the home yesterday preparing for his birthday celebration next Sunday, and it is thought complained of pain and he gradually became weaker until he sank in death. A physician had been called, but he died shortly after. Wife and 6 Children Survive. The decedent is survived by his second wife and six children, namely Theodore speltz of Albert Lea, J. A. Speltz of Oak Ridge, Minn., Mrs. L. F. Kramer, Elba, Mrs. Francis Lehnertz of Rollingstone, and Mrs. Roman Walch of Altura by his first wife, and Arthur Speltz of Albert Lea by his present wife. Peter Speltz was born in Luxemberg (Luxembourg), Germany, on Sept. 29, 1938. He came to Dubuque, Iowa, on May 25, 1864. He stopped there for several weeks with a brother and then proceeded to Rollingstone settling at Oak Ridge, this county on JUne 6, 1864. He has been a resident of this county ever since, having moved to Winona on March 20, 1895. He took a residence at 471 West Fifth Street and lived there during the remaining twenty years of life. Mr. Speltz was married to Annie Rivers on June 25, 1866. She died Oct. 17, 1876, five children surviving and who are still living. His second marriage was to Annie Guidinger at the St. Stanislaus church on Feb. 25, 1878 Father Lawrence officiating. Prominent Old Settler. Mr. Speltz was a prominent member of the Winona County Old Settlers' Association and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He had read the Winona Republican-Herald for nearly fifty years, beginning when he first settled at Oak Ridge, near Rollingstone. The funeral arrangements have not been completed, awaiting the arrival of his children. The service will probably be held from St. Joseph's church. Father Meier officiating. Winona Republican-Herald, Wed. Sept. 29, 1915 Speltz-- Services for the late Peter Speltz were held at St. Joseph's church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. Father Meier officiated. The choir of which Louis M. Jung is organist and which is composed of Paul Kemp, Peter Schmidt, John Guenther, Peter Faber, Mike Kirch and Theodore Miller sang the Gregorian requiem mass. The services were attended by many of the decedent's old friends and neighbors as well as relatives. The Winona County Old Settlers' association and the Knights of Columbus, organizations with which he was affliated, were represented. Interment was made at St. Mary's cemetery.
